1. The Cellhouse Isn’t the Whole Visit
Most people book their Alcatraz tickets thinking mainly about the cellhouse – and it’s worth the hype. But the island itself is bigger than that one building. There are historic ruins, gardens planted by former inmates and officers’ families, walking trails with water views, and rotating exhibits scattered across the grounds. 2. Your Trip Starts at the Ferry Terminal, Not the Island
The moment you board the ferry at Pier 33, the experience begins – this isn’t just a shuttle ride. 4. Take Time for the Views
It’s easy to get pulled straight into the history and forget to look up. From different points on the island, you get the bay on one side and the city skyline and Golden Gate Bridge on the other – views you genuinely can’t get anywhere else in San Francisco. Step outside the cellhouse at some point during your visit and just take it in for a few minutes.
5. Plan for at Least 2-3 Hours
This isn’t a quick photo-stop destination. Between the ferry ride, the audio tour, the exhibits, and exploring the grounds, the National Park Service recommends setting aside two to three hours for the island itself – not counting travel time to and from the pier. Rushing it means missing most of what makes Alcatraz worth visiting in the first place.
6. Wear Real Shoes and Bring a Layer
There’s a fair amount of walking involved, including a steep climb from the dock up to the cellhouse. Comfortable, closed-toe shoes make a real difference here. It’s also worth packing a light jacket regardless of the season – the bay tends to run cooler and windier than the city, even on a warm day in San Francisco.

Alcatraz is one of the most visited sites in San Francisco, and tickets are limited by the number of people the ferry and island can handle each day.
