Alcatraz Tips

Tips for your Alcatraz Tour

Buy Tickets or Tours in Advance

With over 1.4 Million visitors per year, Alcatraz is one of the most popular national park sites in the United States, so it is recommended that you purchase your tickets in advance. You can either purchase Alcatraz only tickets or purchase Alcatraz Tickets as part of a tour package.

What to Wear

The weather in the Bay Area is fairly predictable, but it is usually a little cooler and windier than you would expect. It usually only rains from November to March, but even during the dry months, the temperature can be quite cool. Alcatraz is an island, so it can get quite windy. It is best to dress in layers and a light jacket is always good to have.

Comfortable shoes are also a good idea. The tour can take up to 3 hours and will involve a lot of walking, dpending on how much exploring you want to do.

ID Requirements

To book tickets to Alcatraz will need to have a government issued photo ID. Make sure to bring your photo ID with you to the ticketbooth or tour guide to get your tickets. Photo Id’s are not required for every person in the party, only the person who purchased the tickets will have to show their ID. Photocopies of passports will be permitted if you want to leave your passport in a safe place.

Bring Some food and Drinks

Picnicking is allowed on the island in designated areas, so feel free to bring along some food and drinks if you would like. Bottled water is allowed throughout the island. Alcoholic beverages are available on the Alcatraz Cruise Ferries, but only on the departure trip from the island.

Age Requirements

Alcatraz is all ages, however anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult and must be supervised at all times on the ferry and the island.
